Abstract

Note on the excavation of a rock shelter at Champagne Castle, Natal. Annals of the Natal Museum 11 (1): 157-60.The note describes a small excavation at Champagne Castle, Drakensberg, in a painted rock shelter. The excavation revealed two levels. The upper horizon contained potsherds possibly of Basuto origin and of no great age. The lower Stone Age deposits contained Smithfield N and Wilton artefacts. The paintings on the shelter wall included polychrome eland and red paintings of figures and smaller buck.
